THE FRED HOLLOWS FOUNDATION - MOBILE EYE CLINIC

This state-of-the-art 11.5m mobile facility has been traveling to remote parts of Fiji, providing sight-restoring services to blind people in need. It will double the number of eye surgeries and diabetes laser treatments able to be performed in its first year alone.

The Challenge

01

MOBILE SERVICE AWARENESS

Part of this project was taking the concept of mobile medical care and proving its advantages as a traveling eye care clinic for eliminating avoidable blindness in remote environments around Fiji.

02

USER RESEARCH

Engaging in user insight research aided in identifying and understanding the requirements of both patients and surgeons working in Fiji. This enriched our understanding as designers and promoted a far more informed design process.

03

SELF SUFFICIENT

Creating a design solution which was completely self-sufficient in isolation with all the necessary facilities proved a design success and appropriate for its intended environment.

The Solution

Enriched by user insight and a greater understanding of the specific requirements for this unique project, we aimed to prove the advantages of mobile medical units for remote locations. Utilising our already developed and tested, innovative manufacturing methods, The Foundation’s mobile eye surgery unit aimed to remove barriers to access in remote locations throughout Fiji.

Training and after sales support network was key to ensure the mobile eye surgery unit continues to be used at its full potential as an innovative solution for mobile eye care.
